L4 Enceladus Workshop


September 28-29, 2026


In preparation for the upcoming DLR and ESA L4 workshops, we aim to meet with a broader community and provide a platform for exchange. This collaborative effort will help identify synergies and pave the way for potential L4 partnerships.
Enceladus is a small icy moon of Saturn with a global ocean under its ice shell. It vents ocean material into space through plumes at its south pole, and a spacecraft can sample that material from orbit or at the surface. This makes it one of the more accessible places to study habitability in the outer Solar System, and it is under discussion as the target of ESA's fourth large-class mission (L4).
A mission of this size carries many instruments, and there is considerable German expertise across the relevant instrumentation and science. This workshop brings that community together before the ESA call. The aim is to collect the instrument contributions people can offer, set them against the mission's science objectives, and coordinate them, so that the German community approaches ESA together rather than as separate groups. The result is an organized overview of the possible contributions and of where coverage is strong or thin.

Program

This is a working meeting, not a series of talks, and most of the work happens beforehand. Ahead of the meeting, participants are encouraged — though not required - to submit two short forms: one for an instrument they could contribute, one for expertise they can offer.

L4 Enceladus Workshop Forms

Based on this feedback form, the scientific organizing committee assembles a single overview: the instruments set against the mission's science objectives, for both lander and orbiter.
At the meeting we go through this overview together. Small groups merge overlapping proposals and put instrument teams in contact with the science and expertise they need. The plenum then reviews where the objectives are well covered and where they are not. A writing group compiles the outcome into one document summarizing the instrument contributions and how they map onto the mission's objectives.
A preliminary schedule is given below; a more detailed version will follow closer to the date.
